Dead as a Doornail

Dead as a Doornail
by Charlaine Harris
Rating: ****

Yep, another Sookie Stackhouse book. Sorry. I have two more after this one and then I believe I have to wait till the spring for the latest addition. It's been awhile since I've had to wait for a book to come out. Ah well.

Dead as a Doornail follows Sookie as she tries to find a sniper that is targeting shapeshifters. In fact, some of the shifter community think that Sookie's brother may be to blame and so she has to race against the clock (or full moon) to prove her brother innocent. In addition to the sniping issues, ANOTHER fan of Sookie comes along at the very end, Quinn, who is a weretiger (yeah, they're not wereWOLVES unless they actually become WOLVES).

I think it's truly amazing how many men (well, half men, in this case) are into Sookie. The woman has multiple vampires, shifters AND a werewolf all into her. The girl has GAME. The funny thing, though, is that it doesn't ever seem to go to her head. Throughout all these novels my favorite thing about Sookie is that she stays true to herself. You feed her BS and she's not going to deal with it. Let's just say that Sookie is not one of those girls that you boys could sweet talk and she'd be ready to jump into bed with you. Or... maybe she WOULD jump into bed with you but that doesn't mean she'll fall in love.

Ah! Can't wait for honeymoon reading to begin!

Honeymoon Reads

Anyone who knows me knows that I must always have a book with me - and going on a trip means MULTIPLE books.

Dustin's a little put out that I plan on bringing five books with me on our honeymoon but think of it - two days spent in airports, all those days sitting in the sun not to mention the fact that we can be alone THE WHOLE TIME (or can we).

So here are the books I'll be taking. A couple Sookie Stackhouse books, two YA books and a chick lit book. I think I'm good to go...

Definitely Dead and All Together Dead by Charlaine Harris

Just Listen and This Lullaby by Sarah Dessen

Remember Me by Sophie Kinsella

Dead to the World

Dead to the World
by Charlaine Harris
Rating: ****

Dead to the World is the forth Sookie Stackhouse book and I find that book after book I love her more and more! In this book Sookie's ex, Bill, leaves her to go to Peru and instead Sookie finds herself stuck with Eric, Bill's boss, who has amnesia due to the curse of a witch. Yes, a witch. Aside from there being Werewolves, shapeshifters and vampires there are also witches AND faries. Most of the witches can be fairly decent but there is a coven out to get Eric's business and since he can't seem to remember anything Sookie is stuck vampire sitting. In the meantime, Sookie's brother is missing. So yes, all kinds of trouble, drama AND adventure in this book!

I say it every time but I love these books. They're fairly light reads, that contain a lot of excitement and Sookie's love interests are YUMMY. I actually have to say I like Eric better with the amnesia and I kind of hope he stays the same, sweet guy that he was for most of this book.

Club Dead

In the third Sookie Stackhouse novel, Sookie's boyfriend Bill is missing (and most likely is cheating on her too). So Sookie decides to help Bill's boss Eric find him. Sookie meets a werewolf, Alcide, and together they go to Club Dead to find answers.

I'm really, really liking Sookie and the different men in her life (Bill, Eric and Alcide) are just as amazing! While I've said before, nothing can compare to the love story of Bella and Edward, Sookie had these amazing adventures and men just banging down her door to fight for her (and that's pretty literal). She's a strong character and she doesn't take anyone's shit (pardon my French). I really think she's someone to look up to and this 3rd book is just as good as the first two!

Also, I just finished watching the first season on True Blood and I can't believe I have to wait till next summer for the next season! I already know what happens but it's pretty cool to see the characters come to life!

Living Dead in Dallas

Living Dead in Dallas

Rating: ****

Okay, it's official: I am a Sookie Stackhouse fan.

The second Sookie book takes place in Dallas, Texas. Well, for the most part. Sookie and Bill travel to Dallas to help the Dallas vamps find one of their own, Ferrel, who was kidnapped. Sookie, of course, is brought along because of her ability to read mind (something that seems to come in handy for the vampires).

I liked this book A LOT. After reading the first Sookie novel I was unsure if I would even want to continue the series. While I do like Sookie's character and the first novel was interesting it lacked something for me. I think it's because I really wanted these books to be more like Twilight and they just AREN'T. So I think I've gotten over that (although I have to say that Bill in no Edward) and now I'm enjoying the novels more.

Also, I'm watching the first season of True Blood online (the HBO series based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels). Pretty good if you can get past the softcore porn.

Dead Until Dark

Dead Until Dark
by Charlaine Harris
Rating: ***

Dead Until Dark is the first novel in the Sookie Stackhouse series. It's about a woman, Sookie, who has the ability to read minds (which she claims to be a disability). In her world, vampires have just "come out of the coffin" and she is waiting to meet on in her small Louisiana town of Bon Temps. When Bill, a vampire, comes into her life she it thrown into a whirlwind of romance, danger, murder and lots more.

Obviously, I wanted to read this book because I've become a little obsessed with vampires. I'd also heard that it was made into a TV show on HBO called True Blood. So I was interested. While I feel like the book is a little slow to pick up, especially if you're a fan of the Twilight series it does have a good story and it's a fast, easy read. I would say that it's written FAR different than I thought it would be but Sookie is a decent character and she makes the book go by fast.

I'm definitely continuing the series. So stay tuned!

The Host

The Host
by Stephenie Meyer
Rating: ❤❤

Probably thought I forgot all about this little ol' blog, right?

Not so much. But I've been busy reading
The Host by Stephenie Meyer. And I must say, I'm adding this book to my list of all time favorites!

The Host is about an alien invasion on Earth. The aliens, called Souls, have taken over earth. It's kind of like Invasion of the Body Snatchers; the Souls take over the bodies of humans. The whole point is that the Souls think that the human race has screwed up Earth so they feel that they're doing something good for the planet. The main characters are Wanderer/Melanie. Wandered is the Soul that has taken over Melanie's body. Only rather than fade away, like she's supposed to, Melanie stays there. She forces Wanderer to remember her true love, Jared, and her brother Jamie. Because of this, Wanderer begins to love them too and soon they are on the run, together, from the Souls.

Because I am such a huge Stephenie Meyer fan, I wanted to read this book. However, because it's science fiction (not Young Adult, like Stephenie's previous novels) I was worried I wouldn't like it. While it definitely differed from Stephenie's Twilight books, I really fell in love with this novel. Wanderer is an easy character to love and it's hard to think that she's wrong for wanting to stay in Melanie's body despite the fact that Melanie is still there, fighting right back. The ending could not have been better and it kind of makes you think that even though this planet can seem pretty messed up, maybe there's hope in the fact that some of us are still pretty decent.

The Last Summer (of You and Me)

The Last Summer (of You and Me)
by Ann Brashares
Rating: ❤❤

I'm sure pretty much everyone has heard of the
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants books by now, right? This book is by the same author and her first time writing an adult novel. It's about two sisters, Alice and Riley, and their childhood friend Paul who has come back to the island where their families have summer homes. This summer Alice and Paul finally act on an attraction that they have had for years but decide to keep it a secret so that they don't hurt Riley. During this secret relationship, Riley starts to have problems of her own that threaten the relationship between Alice and Paul.

I have to say, this book felt more like a YA (young adult) read to me than an adult read. Yes, there were a few more adult themes but mostly the characters acted like teenagers, not adults and so it kind of just read that way. It was a really good story but I wasn't moved by it and I didn't fall in love with the characters. This book is definitely more of a beach read and an easy story to finish in a few days.

The Little Lady Agency and the Prince

The Little Lady Agency and the Prince
by Hester BrowneRating: ❤❤

This book is the third book in the Little Lady Agency series. It's about Melissa Romney-Jones, a woman who runs an agency that caters to men who need a little help with their lives. In the third book, Melissa is about to be married to Jonathan, the man that she met when she first created the Little Lady Agency. However, when she agrees to help turn a prince into an upstanding citizen she starts to realize that maybe Jonathan isn't her perfect man.

I LOVED the first two Little Lady Agency books. However, for some reason this one fell a little short to me. It was hard for me to get into it and even when I did I found myself disliking the characters in a way that I never had before. Jonathan lost his charm, Nelson was a total know it all and Melissa was just a pawn for different men to play with. I will say that I give this rating based on the fact that I read this book far after I read the first two. Maybe if I had read the book right after the first two I'd feel a little differently. I will say it's a good beach read.

Next Book: The Last Summer (of You and Me) by Ann Brashares

First Entry

Being that I'm such a huge bookworm, I've decided it might be fun to start a book blog. Not the most interesting name for it but being that I'm right about to start NaNoWriMo I'm putting all my creative juices into that.

Anyway... I'll being posting every time I finish a book - I'll give a synopsis, my review and then a rating from 1 to 5 stars.

First book coming SOON!
